On September 4, 2008, in Aurora, Colorado, little Marten Kudlis was sitting at a table by the window in Baskin-Robbins waiting for his mom to bring him and his buddy ice cream. Two friends, Patricia Guntharp and Debra Serecky, were turning into the parking lot of Good Times in a Mazda pickup truck driven by Patricia. Behind the wheel of a Suburban, illegal alien Francis Hernandez allegedly ran a stop light, struck the pickup and forced both vehicles into the front of the ice cream store.
An injured witness compared the impact of the vehicles to a “bomb going off”. (1) Three year old Marten was caught on a jagged piece of metal debris and dragged outside where he died from blood loss. The two women in the pickup were killed by the impact. All died within minutes. Hernandez ran away from the scene of the homicide.
Duane Stokes, an ex-firefighter, tried to rescue the little boy. Marten squeezed his hand and then drew his last breath, “I just want the community to know...parents to know, he didn’t die alone,” Stokes said. (2)
Patricia Guntharp, 49 and Debra Serecky, 51, were inseparable, the very best of friends. Patricia had three sons and two granddaughters who called her “Care Bear”. "Miss Deb", as Debbie Serecky was called, had six children and doted on her six grandchildren. Her son, Nathan, said his mother had “the biggest heart of anyone he ever knew”. (3)
Hernandez, a Guatemalan national, entered the country illegally in 1991. He used eleven aliases and was arrested sixteen times in the last five years for various crimes, including assault and theft. In July, he was charged at a traffic stop for resisting police and other offenses. Hernandez was never detained by ICE officials. Hernandez is charged with three counts of vehicular homicide.
